College and Career Readiness Standards officially begin in Middle School, however our family takes a different approach. We allow our children to develop talents and interests and encourage them to participate in volunteer work, small jobs in family businesses, and children’s markets regularly. When a child shows interest in a career we research the requirements, education, and experiences that may put that goal in reach on a developmentally appropriate level. We work to find people in that field and talk with them, ask for advice, and encourage our children to look for opportunities to help. In Middle School, we take a yearly look at the standards and apply them to their current interests.
